(something to tide y’all over while I try to get all my attempts at finishing commissions to not look like shit)
Concept sketches for the Beast.
A couple months ago, I sat down and did something scary; I finally started designing the other main character of my eventual webcomic, Dualité, a genderbent retelling of the Beauty and the Beast story set in early twentieth century America.
It’s scary because I’ve been avoiding doing it for five years. I came up with this project six years ago, so it’s been a really long time going. I wanted the Beast to have the same visual function as Disney’s Beast, in that she had to have the capacity for being completely monstrous and terrifying, and then completely human and awkward. But then there was the added difficulty of this Beast being female, which comes with a whole new dynamic, but that was the whole point of this project. All of that wrapped up into one character design kept it on the backburner for years.
But I think I finally like this design. I want her to be tall, taller than the Beauty of the story (who is a pretty tall guy himself), and have a swimmer/runner sort of build while being really muscular with a broad, raised back and satyr-ish legs. I think I’ve got the scary animal part down; next I need to sketch out the awkward human part.
These are pretty messy but I like where she’s going - the bottom left snarl-y one is the closest to what I’m picturing.
